5 Weeks of Playing Cards: How To Play Old Maid

5 Weeks of Playing Cards: How To Play Old Maid
Posted on

Throughout September, we are showcasing our beautiful Piatnik playing cards while teaching you how to play a new card game. We celebrated Digital Detox Day on the 5th September, and playing card games are a great way to turn off your digital devices and play some card games with your friends.

You can read our blog about other ways to have a digital detox here.

This week, learn how to play Old Maid.

This is fun, family-friendly game for 3 or more players. The aim of the game is to use all your cards up first. Whoever is left with the last queen at the end, loses.

How to Play: Old Maid

How Many Players

1 standard pack of cards, jokers removed.

Set Up

Before you shuffle the cards, discard one queen. Shuffle the remaining cards and deal them out to all players. Some players may have one card more than others.

How To Play

Each player removes all the pairs they have in their hand. For example, if someone has the two of spades and the two of clubs, they are removed as a pair. If you are holding three of a kind, only remove two.

The dealer then offers their hand of cards to the person to their left face down, who draws one card from it. This player discards any pair that has been created by drawing this card. They then offer their hand face down to the person next to them who takes a card.

Play continues this way until all cards have been paired up except the remaining queen who does not have a pair – the Old Maid.

And that's how you play Old Maid. Have fun! If you enjoy playing, don't forget to tag us on social with #GibsonsCardGames.

For this game we used our fantastic Pack of Positivity playing cards.
